Born on November 2, 1965, Shah Rukh Khan, commonly referred to by his initials SRK, is an Indian actor and producer who mostly works in Hindi cinema. Called "King Khan" and "Baadshah of Bollywood" by the press, he has starred in over 90 films and won several awards, including 14 Filmfare Awards. The governments of France and India have bestowed upon him the Legion of Honour and the Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in addition to the Padma Shri. In Asia and among the Indian diaspora around the globe, Khan has considerable popularity. Several media sites have referred to him as one of the world's most successful film stars in terms of both audience size and money.
As of 2015, Khan co-owns the Trinbago Knight Riders of the Caribbean Premier League and the Kolkata Knight Riders of the Indian Premier League. He is also co-chairman of the motion film production business Red Chillies Entertainment and its subsidiaries. Because of his numerous endorsement deals and business endeavours, the media sometimes refers to him as "Brand SRK". He frequently hosts television shows and acts in theatre productions. Through his charitable work, Khan has helped people in need of health care and disaster assistance. In recognition of his support for children's education, UNESCO awarded him the Pyramide con Marni honour in 2011; in 2018, the World Economic Forum awarded him the Crystal honour for his advocacy of women's and children's rights in India.
Family
The father of Shah Rukh Khan, Mir Taj Mohammed Khan, was a fighter for Indian independence from Peshawar who fought with the Khudai Khidmatgar, an organisation that advocated for an independent and unified India via peaceful resistance led by Abdul Ghaffar Khan. Mir was a member of the Indian National Congress and an adherent of Abdul Ghaffar Khan. Additionally, he was the cousin of Shah Nawaz Khan, a significant general in the Indian National Army. Khan claims that Mir Jan Muhammad Khan, his paternal grandfather, was an Afghani Pashtun (Pathan) of ethnic descent. Contrary to the assertion that his grandpa was a Pashtun from Afghanistan, his paternal relatives in Peshawar afterwards stated that the family spoke Hindko and is originally from Kashmir, from where they arrived in Peshawar decades ago.
Early Life
Khan was raised in the New Delhi area of Rajendra Nagar. The family had a middle-class lifestyle in leased flats, and his father owned many businesses, including a restaurant. Khan was a standout student at St. Columba's School in central Delhi, where he won the Sword of Honour, the school's highest honour, for his academic and athletic achievements in football and hockey. At first, Khan wanted to be a professional athlete, but he was unable to play because of a shoulder ailment sustained in his early years. Rather, as a young man, he performed in theatre productions and won awards for his Bollywood actor impressions. Dilip Kumar, Amitabh Bachchan, and Mumtaz were among his favourites.
The Bollywood actress Amrita Singh was a childhood friend and acting partner of his. Khan studied economics for his bachelor's degree at Hansraj College (1985–1988), but he was more involved in the acting programme at Delhi's theatrical Action Group (TAG), where he was coached by theatrical director Barry John. He enrolled to Jamia Millia Islamia to pursue a master's degree in mass communication after Hansraj, but he later dropped out to focus on his acting career. During his early Bollywood career, he also studied at Delhi's National School of Drama. His mother passed away in 1991 due to complications from diabetes, while his father passed away from cancer in 1981. Following their parents' deaths, Khan took on the role of caring for his older sister Shahnaz Lalarukh (born 1960), who had become despondent. Shahnaz is still residing in their Mumbai house with her brother and his family.
Personal Life
After courting for six years, Khan wed Punjabi Hindu Gauri Chibber on October 25, 1991, in a customary Hindu wedding. Their daughter Suhana was born in 2000, while their son Aryan was born in 1997. They welcomed a third child into their family in 2013—a son called AbRam—who was born via surrogacy. Both of Khan's older children have indicated that they would like to work in the entertainment industry. Aryan, for example, studied filmmaking at the USC School of Cinematic Arts in California, and Suhana, who assisted Khan in the making of his film Zero (2018), is pursuing a degree in drama and acting at NYU's Tisch School of the Arts.
In November 2019, Suhana starred in her first short film, "The Grey Part of Blue." Khan says he respects his wife's faith even though he is a devout Muslim. Both religions are practised by his children; at his house, the Qur'an is placed next to a murti of Hindu deities. Even though Shahrukh Khan was his birth name, Khan likes to have his name spelled as Shah Rukh Khan and goes by the initials SRK.
